Learn How To Transform Any Dresser To Match Your Color Scheme Perfectly

When you find a great piece of furniture for an affordable price, it can be hard to pass on the great deal. There are times when the style of the piece may match the decorating style you have in your home, but the color doesn't. When this happens, the only thing you need to do is customize the piece to match your style perfectly. Below is a quick and easy guide for turning a beautiful dresser into a work of art that you will be proud to display in your home.

Supplies You'll Need

  • Two Colors of Latex Paint
  • Different Sized Paint Brushes
  • Painter's Tape
  • A Sheet
  • A Screwdriver

Prepare the Dresser

Remove all of the drawers from the dresser. Use the screwdriver to carefully remove the knobs from the front of the drawers. You do not want to paint with the knobs on the drawers as it will leave areas unpainted and it could be noticeable, if you ever decide to swap the handles.

Prepare the Room

Spread the sheet onto the floor and place the dresser on top of it to ensure your floor is not damaged during the painting process.

Paint the Dresser

Use one color of the paint to paint the entire dresser and the drawer fronts. You need to create a solid, even color over the entire dresser. Allow the paint to dry overnight and then assess if the color is the color you want for the dresser, or if you feel that another coat may be needed. If another coat is needed, repeat this step. If not, continue to the next step in the process.

Tape off the Sides of the Dresser

Place a strip of painter's tape at the top of the dresser on one side. The tape needs to go from the front edge to the rear edge of the side. Take another piece of tape and place it directly under the first piece. Repeat the process until the entire side of the dresser is covered with tape. Carefully pull the second piece of tape off of the dresser. Next, pull away every other piece of tape after that piece to reveal stripes on the dresser. Repeat the process with the other side of the dresser. This method of creating stripes allows you to get the look you want, without requiring you to spend any time taking measurements or making marks to determine where the stripes should be located.

Paint the Stripes

Use the second color of paint on the exposed stripes on the dresser. Allow the paint to dry overnight and then remove the rest of the painter's tape from the dresser. You should see two different colors of stripes on the sides of the dresser.

Use the screwdriver to replace the knobs on the drawers, put the drawers back into the dresser, and you are done with your big furniture transformation. You can use this technique to change any piece of furniture you choose. Be creative and adventurous with paint and stencils and the sky's the limit when it comes to the amazing pieces of furniture you can have in your home.

You can even buy new pieces from retailers like Home Furniture Co., Inc and transform them. Furniture retailers often have a clearance section of items that are slightly damaged or scuffed, and you can easily mask these flaws with a new coat of pain.
